ANTS Malacca 2007

June 10th, 2007 by firstklang-buzz

On the 26th to the 28th of May 2007, the Boys’ Brigade in Malaysia organized the Advanced NCO Training School in Malacca. This 3-day training school has a purpose, not only to develop our NCO quality, but becoming leaders for the rest of our life.

There are a few topics in the syllabus, which are problem solving, ethical decision making, values-centered leadership, conflict management and goal setting.

Being the only company from the Selangor state to participate, the First Klang Company has sent four members to participate in this Advanced NCO Training School; Corporal Alan Tan, L/Corporal Jonathan Raj, L/Corporal Roy Ong and me, L/ Corporal Gan Ken Ee.

DAY 1

We were taken to Malacca by W/O Gun, willingly to drive us there. Journey there was indeed dull, as most of us were asleep in the car. Reaching our destination (SMK Methodist (ACS) Malacca), we met 2 of the officers who would be coaching us throughout the training school, Capt. Eric Tan and Lt. Stuart Wong (BBM HQ). We had breakfast with them.

We were supposed to register by 9 a.m.. However, due to some weird reasons, we were late. We tried to register before 9 am, but we just couldn’t.

So we were told that we’re disqualified UNLESS we can convince them to let us participate. Every company sent in a representative, each giving their own reasons.
The companies that participated in this ANTS were the 1st Melaka Copany, 2nd Melaka Company, 3rd Melaka Company, 1st Teluk Intan Company, 1st Manjung Company, 2nd Manjung Company, 1st Klang Company and the 10th Kuala Lumpur Company.

Well, every company managed to participate as we were given a CHANCE by the officers.

It was just the starting of ANTS.

After divided into our EET [Equipping and Empowering Team (best known as Squad)] and checking into our dorm, we played the CHAIRS game. As far as I can remember, we played this game in our company’s Boot Camp last year. The purpose of this game is to promote co-operation and team work as well.

The opening ceremony kicked off after lunch, with members dressed in their day-dress uniform. Reverend Richard Tok, the Brigade Chaplain was there for the opening ceremony. The ANTS Malacca was officially started.

As usual, all kinds of common problems like members not knowing their Table Grace happened (make sure you guys know them well).

Dsc00496

After dinner, we watched a movie about values and ethics. It’s a famous Disney cartoon which brings a lot of values. (want to know the movie? Join ANTS next year)
We were asked questions by our EET coach.

  The coaches were:

  Lt. Stuart Wong (BBM HQ)
  Capt. Eric Tan (BBM HQ)
Hon. Capt. Eric Lim (3rd Melaka)
Capt. Boh Chek Sing (2nd Melaka)
Lt. Philip Tan Wee Lee (2nd Melaka)

Corporal Alan Tan and L/Corporal Jonathan Raj were members of EET 1 and L/ Corporal Roy Ong and I were members of EET 2. There was a total of 6 EETs.

DAY 2

We woke up at 6.15 a.m., 45 minutes before breakfast. Some of us had a good night sleep, some were still tired. Most of the day was spent on EET work, creating team rules and doing project together. We learned problem solving on this day. Also, we played a problem solving game right after lunch. Quite tough though, but as you do it again and again, you managed to do it faster and faster. It is a very interesting game.

After this activity, we went back to our classes for our EET project. We learned values-centered leadership and ethical decision making as well. Learning was fun especially when every member is required to give out ideas in a particular project. Many of us managed to communicate well with each other, even though we are from different companies. This actually promotes true BB member to BB member relationship.

One of the greatest advantages of joining this school is that there is NO such thing as RANKING. Every member regardless of rank had the chance to voice out their opinions. Lower ranking members were able to lead the higher ranking NCOs, taking turns to lead their EET. Therefore, the lower ranking members would gain confidence. In this school, everyone is a Leader.

We learned causes of conflicts too. Some of the causes of conflicts are misunderstandings, differences in values, competition and sinful attitudes.

DAY 3

It’s the final day. We woke up about 6.30 a.m.  After breakfast, we put on our Mufti (with ANTS shirt) and continued with our classes. All of us were busy getting each others email and contact numbers. We knew that it was the last day, and after that it would be good bye. After swapping emails and numbers, we carried on with our class till 12.00 p.m., which was then our Closing ceremony. All the officers were seated, and the participants are the ones in-charge of the running of the closing ceremony. Then, representatives from each EET were required to give a speech, followed by representatives from each company.

For EET 1, Corporal Alan Tan was the representative; giving speech regarding his EET. For EET 2, L/ Corporal Roy Ong was the representative, giving a speech regarding his EET. When representatives from each EET finished giving out their speech, a member from every company was required to give out a speech. Though nervous, I managed to give a short speech regarding the 3-day event.

When the event had finally come to an end, we had lunch. Lunch was always good on the last day. No more so-called stress. For remembrance, we took pictures

        Some members left “nicknames”.

Alan was called Mr. Globe by Capt. Eric Tan due to some special reasons, and Roy was called “Highwayman” by Hon Capt. Eric Lim. (Roy was also called “JEREMY” by two 10th KL members, Aaron Heng and Amanda Wong). Jonathan is one of the 2 Indians that participated in this training school.

P5260860

W/O Gun picked us up at about 2.30 p.m.. We left Malacca with heavy hearts, but that’s that. Waving goodbye tells you it’s the end of the camp, but the beginning of learning.

God bless!

Who’s next? or A change..

May 22nd, 2007 by firstklang-buzz

" Though one may conquer a million men in
battlefield, he who has conquered himself, is the noblest victor "

"Once upon a time, a man in a hot air balloon realized
that he was lost.He reduced altitude and spotted a woman below. He
descended a bit more and shouted. "Excuse me, can you help me? I promised
a friend I would meet him an hour ago, but I don’t know where I
  am."

The woman below replied. "You’re in a hot air balloon
hovering approximately 30 feet above the ground. You’re between 50 and 51
degrees north latitude and between 114 and 115 degrees west
  longitude."

"You must be an engineer," said the balloonist.

"I
am," replied the woman. "How did you know?"

"Well," answered the
balloonist, "everything you told me is technically correct, but I’ve no
idea what to make use of your information. The fact is, I’m still lost.
Frankly, you’ve not been much help at all. If anything, you’ve delayed my
  trip."

The woman below responded, "You must be in
  management."

"I am," replied the balloonist, "but how did you know?"

"Well," said the woman, "you don’t know where you are or where
you’re going. You have risen to where you are due to a large quantity of
  hot air.

You made a promise, which you’ve no idea how to keep, and
you expect people beneath you to solve your problems. The fact is, you are
in exactly the same position you were in before we met, but now, somehow,
you’ve managed to make it my fault!!"

1 Dollar and 100 Dollar Bill

May 14th, 2007 by firstklang-buzz

One day, a one dollar bill and a hundred dollar bill got folded together and began talking about their life experiences.

The hundred dollar bill began to brag:

"I’ve had a great life,"
he said. "I’ve been to all the big hotels, Donald Trump himself used me
at his casino, I’ve been in the wallets of Fortune 500 board members,
I’ve flown from one end of the country to the other! I’ve even been in
the wallet of two Presidents of the United States, and once when
Princess Diana visited the US, she used me to buy a packet of gum."

In awe, the dollar humbly responded, "Gee, nothing like that has ever happened to me, …but I have been to church a lot!"

JumBoO SALE !!!

April 23rd, 2007 by firstklang-buzz

It all starts from an evening chit-chat joking sessions as usual right after the BB parade, where everybody that wana chill themselve, we make jokes, lame ones, funny ones, ridiculous ones, serious ones and the jokes keep rolling on..

Then suddenly, we came out a topic on how to manage the junKs that stuck in our BB room for such a long time.. stuff like uniforms, belts, hangers, magazines, towel.. u name it we got it..

So this guy Joel Barath is the person incharged of the BB room was kinda frustrated i guess… or rather annoyed with all the useless stuff that have been dumped in the rooms for years.. I think so..

Then I cracked a joke, hey Joel why don’t we have a JumbO sALe!!! just like Megasale in our country where we offer great discount???!!! Then all of us, including me was laughing n cracking more jokes, where we starts to think of providing trolleys n baskets for our customers ( BB members ) selling products such as used kiwi, belts, pants, then we even joke of having a fitting room for members to try out their desired outfit… wakakakakak

Well this guy, Joel actually catches the point and the opportunity from the jokes… He seriously consider about this option and trying to take this opportunity to clear off all the left over items in our BB room and at the same time raising fund for the NCO council…

On 21st April 2007, the JumBo Sale was held led by our Cpl Joel i guess.. and together with the support from the NCO council members.. they offer items for a price as low as 50cents!!!! wow that was great!!! without a doubt everybody wants to buy something from our BB room hahah

Finally guess what.. The NCO Council has managed to raise a fund of RM100++ from the JumBo sale and manage to clear out most of the items that were stuck in our BB rooms for years!

Great job to the council n last but not least, Joel. A successful event indeed.

Dare to try, dare to fail, and because you are ready to try, and with a little bit of the never give up spirit.. I believe success will come one day. You need not to search for your inspirations elsewhere, Inspirations revolve around you always!

What you need are,

  • An Idea (our daily evening afta BB jokes)
  • A Great Team (the members that were laughing and cracking jokes)
  • Good Spirit (impossible is nothing)

if you have all these 3 essential ingredients, I believe that you can transform a s^*t into Gold.

To the ends of the earth

"Love unfailing
Overtaking my heart
You take me in
Finding peace again
Fear is lost in all You are

And I would give the world to tell You’re story
Cause I know that You’ve called me
I know that You’ve called me
I’ve lost myself for good within Your promise
I won’t hide it
I won’t hide it

Jesus, I believe in You
And I would go to the ends of the earth
To the ends of the earth
For You alone are the Son of God
And all the world will see
That You are God

Equipment

March 31st, 2007 by firstklang-buzz

Figure it out for yourself my friend. You’ve got all that the great have had.
Two arms, two legs, two hands, two eyes, and a brain to use if you’d be wise.
With this equipment they all began, so start for the top and say "I Can."

Look them over the wise and the great. They take their food from a common
plate. With similar knives and forks they
use, with similar laces they tie their shoes. The world consider them brave
and smart, but you know - you’ve got all
they had, when they made their start.

You can triumph and come to skill you can be great if you only will. You’re
well equipped for the fight you choose,
you have arms and legs and brains to use. And people who have risen, great
deeds to do started their lives with no
more than you.

You are the handicap you must face. You are the one who must choose your
place. You must say where you want to
go. How much you’ll study the truth to know. God has equipped you for life,
but he lets you decide what you want to be.

The courage must come from the soul within, you must furnish the will to
win. So figure it out for yourself my friend, you
were born with all the great have had. With your equipment they all began,
so start for the top and say "I Can."

Before we go on, First Klang would like to take the opportunity to thank the members that have spent their time and effort to paint the KK banner. A job well done.

The journey of the banner begins…….

Img_2141

As you can see the picture above, we’re actually on a mission to conquer the Mount KK, the survivors are Capt & wife, Muthu, Don, Winsun & me. This was the first day we arrived in Sandakan, Sabah. Once we reached our hotel, which was kinda cramp.. We are so excited to present our BANNER and we eventually hung it up in our room, while enjoying the entire night. We never let that BANNER left out from our sight, kinda funny, but i think all of us feel good when looking, glancing, or wat so ever at the BANNER.

Img_2161

Yeah we have arrive the lowest part of Mount KK, carrying our BANNER along. We try to have a good view of the peak. Chilling around.. la la la…

Img_2165_1

Okay.. we have reached the entrance gate of the Mount KK. The guide told us, "Kalau u orang sudah masuk gate ini, semua orang kena panjat, no turning back". Then we’re like.. yayay OKOK… Well.. before we start our expedition, we took our BANNER out and took a picture.. and again we feeling so good.. hahah… okokok.. let’s look at the BANNER, the message ONE BAND ONE SOUND..hmmnn.. thats cool.. it symbolize our united and progressing band.. well obviously we’re bringing that up! haha ONE WEEK 7 DAYS….er people.. what was this huhhh?? Oh.. that tells us that the BB spirit will always be lifted up right now! then, after & forever… then messages like SURE & STEDFAST.. this n that.. bla bla bla….

Img_2201

Counting steps.. asking ourselves.. Why are we paying $$ for this trip for such a hard time.. Believe me.. We are crawling up.. and Winsun was hopping around.. he’s fit! Sharp at 5.45am we fought hard and reached the peak. I dono whether I could do it alone but thanks to everybody that stands for everybody.. perhaps TEAM WORKS! yahoo!!! All of us are feeling good! and when we feel good.. We took out the BANNER and snap a shot.. commemorating our official conquer of the Mount KK. yeah yeah take that!!! arrgggHHH!!!

Img_2230

Well.. this picture was taken when we have reached the foot.. feeling good that we’ve finaaLLly end our mission.. and here you go… the BANNER is in action again!!! Everobody thumbs up! Muthu peace sign.. well.. not too bad huh… hahah

Img_2239

Okay this part was quite weird.. after we left Mount KK, we headed for Kota Kinabalu before we go for Manukan Island the next day. During the morning, when everyone of us are ready for the island hopping, we gather down in the hotel lobby, and someone did actually hung our BANNER right in front of the reception desk.. and we’re like.. eh who was that lar…!!! come on… well no one admitted.. mayb is the hotel staff that did it.. they’re proud too!!! hahah cheers!

That’s the journey of the BANNER starting from Klang, all the way to east Malaysia, Sandakan, Ranau, Mount KK, Kota Kinabalu, Manukan Island and back to our home.. Klang again.. Well I think, all of us are proud and at the same time humble to be one  of The First Klang members! The Brigade belongs to all.. everyone that have the passion for God and the BB ministry..

Do not be shy, do not be afraid, Be proud and Be humble because you’re from The First Klang BB Company, you’re from the Boys’ Brigade Malaysia.

The Brigade belongs to all, regardless you’re a junior.. pte.. nco.. officers.. ex-members.. COME N JOIN US!

THE BRIGADE BELONGS TO ALL…..
