What’s the price for Success?

Tuesday, August 30th, 2005

SUCCESS ! ! ! What a great word it seems.. yet how many people out there can achieve it.. especially working with a big group of people.. stuNNed~ hahah okay.. There’s only two situation right now.. hahah "Those who don’t realise the price of Success" OR "Those who know the price but are not willing to pay it". Well, I assume that you don’t realise the price of Success. [ i hope !!!] Below are the prices need to pay for SUCCESS - if you choose to be one.

Sacrifice
There can be no success without sacrifice. He would accomplish little must sacrifice little; he who would achieve much must sacrifice much. When you become part of a team, you may be aware of some of the things you will have to give up. But you can be sure that no matter how much you expect to give fir the team, at some point you will be required to give more. That’s the nature of teamwork. The team gets to the top only through the sweat, blood, and sacrifice of its team members.

Time Commitment
Teamwork does not come cheaply. It cost you time - that means you pay for it with your life. It takes time to get to know people, to build relationships with them, to learn how you and they work together. Teamwork can’t be developed in microwave time. Teams grow strong in a Crock-Pot environment.

Personal Development
Team will reach its potential only if you reach your potential. Or to put it in another way, we cannot become what we need to be by remaining what we are. That desire to keep striving, to keep geeting better, is a key to your ability, but it is also crucial for the betterment of the team. It’s what u learn after u know it all counts.

Unselfishness
People naturally look out for themselves. The question "What’s in it for me?" is never far from their thoughts. But if a team is to reach its potential, its player must put the team’s agenda ahead of their own. Some people see the big picture more easily than others do and realize that they will receive more if they give more. For others that is more difficult - especially if they already have a track record of high achievement. BUT the THEORY is "When you give your best to the world, the world returns the favor." And if you give your best to the team, believe it or not, it will return more to you than you give, and together you will achieve  more than you can on your own.

Certainly there are other prices individuals must pay to be part of a team. You can probably list several specific ones you’ve paid to be on a team. The point is that people can choose to stand on the sidelines of life and try to do everything solo. Or they can get into the game by being part of a team. It’s a trade-off between independence and interdependence. The rewards of teamwork can be great, but there is always a cost. You always have to give up to go up.

What’s the BIG PICTURE?

Tuesday, August 23rd, 2005

During world war 2, when Britain was experiencing the darkest days, the country had a diffucult time keeping man and women in the coal mines. Many wanted to give up their dirty, thankless jobs in the dangerous mines to join the military service, which garnered much public praise and support. Yet their work in the mines was critical to the success of the war. Without coal the military and the people at home would be in trouble.
So the prime minister faced thousands of coal miners one day and told them of their importance to the war effort, how their role could make or break the goal of maintaining England’s freedom.
Churchill painted a picture of what it would be like when the war ended, of the grand parade that would honour the people who fought the war. First would come the sailors of the navy, he said the people who continued the tradition of Trafalgar and the defeat of the Spain Armada. Next would come the best and brightest of Britain, the pilots of the Royal Air Force who fended off the German Luftwaffe. Following them would be the soldiers who had fought at Dunkirk.
Then last of all would come the coal-dust-covered men in miners’ caps. And Churchill indicated that someone from the crowd might say,"And where were you during the critical days of the struggle?" And the voices of ten thousand men would respond, "We were deep in the earth with our faces to the coal."
It’s said that tears appeared in the eyes of those hardened men. And they return to their inglorious work with steely resolve, having been reminded of the role they were playing in their country’s noble goal of preservating freedom for the Western world.

That’s the kind of mindset it takes to have a good team. It takes the courage and the resolve to recognise that the goal is more important than the role. It’s no small thing for people to do what’s best for the team. Often it means sacrificing personal satisfaction, individual statistics, or personal glory. "Everybody on a champion team doesn’t get publicity, but everyone can say he’s a champion."

Think about it.. Can You See The Big Picture of the Company? Is your role more important than the Goal? or Is the Goal more important than your role? It’s in your hand.. Think.. Act.. & Change…

Why Do We Stand Alone? [ Think about it ]

Tuesday, August 9th, 2005

Knowing that we do about the potential of teams, why do some people still want to do things by themselves? I believe there are a number of reasons.

EGO
Few people are fond of admiting that they can’t do everything, yet that is a reality of life. There are no superman.
"Spinning more plates doesn’t increase your talent - it increases your likelihood of dropping the plate." So the question is not whether you can do everything by yourself; it’s how soon you’re going to realize that you can’t. It marks a big step in yout development when you come to realize that other people can help you do a better job than you could do alone. To do something really big, let go of your ego, and get ready to be part of a team.

INSECURITY
Some individuals fail to promote teamwork because they feel threatened by other people. ‘Insecurity’ rather than poor judgement or lack of intelligence, most often causes leaders to surround themselves with weak people.Only secure leaders give power to others. On the other hand, insecure leaders usually fail to build teams because of one of two reasons: Either they want to maintain control over everything for which they are responsible, or they fear being replaced by someone more capable. In either case, leaders who fail to promote teamwork undermine their own potential and erode the best efforts of the people with whom they work.
"We should not only use all the brains we have, but all that we can borrow".

NAIVETE
"If I had it to do all over again, I’d get help." That remark accurately represents the feelings of the third type of people who fail to become team builders. They naively underestimate the difficulty of achieving big things. As a result, they try to go it alone. Some people who start out in this group turn out okay in the end. They discover that their dreams are bigger than their capabilities, they realize they won’t accomplish their goals solo, and they adjust. They make team building their approach to achievement. But some others learn the truth too late, and as a result, they never accomplish their goals. And that’s a shame.

TEMPERAMENT
Some people aren’t very outgoing and simply don’t think in terms of team building and team participation. As they face challenges, it never occurs to them to enlist others to achieve something. TIPs - Whenever you face any kind of challenge, the very first thing to do is to think about the people you want on the team to help with it. If you do everything alone and never partner with other people, you create huge barriers to your own potentials. "People have been known to achieve more as a result of working with others than against them." It takes a team to do anything of lasting value. For the person trying to do everything alone, the game is really over. If you want to do something big, you must link up with others. One is too small a number to achieve Greatness.

Think about all these reasons. Are you in one of them? Do you recognise them? Then, it’s a time to change for good. Individuals play the game, but Teams win championships ! ! !

                   ONE TEAM ONE VISION - 111 -
